Lidocaine / Tetracaine Topical Ointment

Lidocaine/Tetracaine ointment consists of 2 pharmaceutical drugs that are combined and used topically as local anesthetics.

The most common formulation by prescription, includes but is not limited to, Lidocaine 23% / Tetracaine 7% in an ointment base.  The ointment is most used by physicians before dermatological procedures (ex. Botox, Morpheus, Laser, Fillers, Peels, Microneedling). This preparation could exist in a cream and also the concentrations can be customized.

The ointment is dispensed in a light resistance airless pump (100ml or 250ml) with a metered dose pump of 1ml.

  • Lidocaine is a commonly used topical anesthetic, with an onset of action of about four minutes. It works by blocking sodium channels to stop local neurons from signaling the brain.

  • Tetracaine is another topical anesthetic. It is longer acting but also takes longer to work than lidocaine. It works by changing the function of ryanodine receptors that control the release of intracellular calcium.

Safety and precautions

  • The ointment should always be administered under the supervision of a physician. It is intended for the use of short-term numbing and should only be used on a small area of intact skin.

  • For external use only.

  • The ointment should not be applied to open wounds, areas of the skin that are damaged or blistered.

  • The intended dose  for application should be determined  by the physician and dose should not be exceeded.

  • Application should be administered 30-45 min before procedure for full effectiveness.

  • These products are not intended for prolonged application time or use.

Storage

The ointment should be kept in its original container at room temperature and kept away from heat, moisture, and light. Throw away any unused medication after the BUD has passed. Do not flush unused medications or pour down a sink or drain. Keep them out of reach of children. Consult with a dermatologist or healthcare provider for guidance on its safe and effective use.
