Jessner’s Solution - Chemical Peel
One of the most popular chemical peel treatments, the Jessner’s peel, has been around for over 100 years. This combination peel was available in different concentrations until the dermatologist Max Jessner set a standard formulation.
Jessner’s solution is a medical grade chemical peel that uses prescription strength ingredients that remove the top layer of damaged skin to allow new, undamaged layer of skin to grow. The combination of ingredients works to efficiently peel away dead skin and increase skin cell turnover.
Jessner’s solution is compounded with equal parts Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid and Resorcinol. The solution addresses various issues such as melasma, acne scarring and wrinkles.
The solution is not available commercially and requires a prescription from a doctor. The most popular formula that is prepared in our lab is 14% Lactic Acid / 14% Salicylic Acid / 14% Resorcinol. Also available is modified Jessner’s Peel.

Active Ingredient
-
Lactic Acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that acts similarly to glycolic acid. Because of its larger molecular structure, it may not penetrate the skin as deeply as glycolic acid.
It also helps maintain moisture in the deeper layers of the skin.
-
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid that exfoliates skin and can improve its texture and color. In addition it helps enhance the penetration of other ingredients and has an antiseptic effect.
-
It is used as an antiseptic and disinfectant . Resorcinol works by helping to remove hard, scaly, or roughened skin.
Safety and precautions
The solution must be used under the administration of a physician with the proper training in applying peels to the skin.
For external use only.
The higher the concentration and the longer the application duration of the chemical peel, the greater the intensity and peeling effect.
Careful instructions regarding preparation and post-treatment care must be followed.
Those with sensitive skin should also proceed with caution when considering a chemical peel.
Chemical peels will always result in redness, swelling and dry flaky skin afterwards, however severe pain, swelling, burning and excessive scabbing that does not subside should always be reported to your dermatologist.
